It is one thing to enjoy the presence of the Holy Spirit in a great church service; however, it is another thing altogether to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in our daily walk through life. Our carnal nature struggles against the work of the Holy Spirit in our life. It is for this reason that we are asking the question today: “Are you walking in the Spirit?” –Bishop Timothy Miller
KEY TEXT: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).
One of the primary jobs that the Holy Spirit came to do in our lives as believers is to lead and guide us into all truth. Confirm this from John 16:13. The Holy Spirit came to help us walk what we talk! He helps us to walk in truth, for it is the truth that sets us free. Jesus came to give us freedom from the bondage of sin and the Holy Spirit has come to help us walk in that freedom (Galatians 5:1,5; II Corinthians 3:17).
Let’s be honest: Have you ever left a powerful service where the Spirit of the Lord was really moving in your life only to find yourself going back to some bad habit, bad attitude, or some struggle you are facing with your carnal nature? The problem is that we have got to let the Holy Spirit get into our walk–our daily life. Study Ezekiel 36:26,27 to find out what happens when the Holy Spirit is within us.
The Apostle Paul admonishes the church to be led by the Spirit in Galatians 5:16-25. Verse 25 in the New Living Translation says, “Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” Do we sometimes limit what areas in our lives we allow the Spirit to have control? As those who belong to Christ there must be a Holy Ghost conviction in our lives. The scripture says, “Whosoever is born of God, doth not commit sin”(I John 3:9a). If you are born again, the Holy Spirit that is in you will not co-exist with sin. That’s why when sin shows its ugly head, it has to be “crucified”.
Walking in the Spirit starts with surrender to Jesus. In Romans 8:1-6,13,14 Paul describes the work that Christ completed so that we might be able to walk in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to follow the Lamb wherever He may lead us. He will give us the direction we need in every situation if we will only listen to Him and obey (Isaiah 30:21). Only when we follow His leading are we walking in the Spirit.
